Compliant mechanism under high current
Demcon takes on diverse projects, often with complex high-tech challenges. This project has an extremely high volumetric heat load on mechanical components, which therefore need to be cooled with a liquid metal cooling system. To test both the cooling and the material strengths under extreme conditions, we reproduce this heat load through a Joule heating system of 15kA current. This causes several mechanical challenges in the test setup. Not only must the high current supply be connected to the liquid metal tubing in a safe manner, but the forces from thermal expansion and gravity of the high current connections should be excluded from the material strength test. This means the mechanism supplying the heat load should be compliant yet effective in delivering 15kA of current.
